Hope for Westfall

It’s time for a new art series! I’m playing my way through the game, and will pick up inspiration to paint along the way. I intend to do a full play-through, picking up all of the quests that I’d usually ignore along the way.

My first piece was at level 15, making my way through Westfall.

I tried some brand new techniques for this painting after watching a few videos. I did a grayscale painting, trying to learn to paint with only values. Then, I colored the piece using a gradient map. This was the result:

Hope for Westfall

There is no hope. Only Vanessa. –World of Warcraft’s Vanessa VanCleef

If you want to see the guide I followed, check it out here:

Brushboost also did a subsequent video on gradient maps. It is going to be such a time-saver with practice! There is still brushwork to be done over the top, but just getting your color palette right from the get-go is so much help.

Inktober Days 7-9

This is my third batch of Inktober Sketches. I post three per batch- so if you missed them, you can catch my first two here and here.

Read more about Inktober at the end of the post!

Days 7-9:

inktober-7-banshee

Day 7 : “Banshee”

A wailing banshee, inspired by the banshee models in World of Warcraft.

inktober-8-crooked

Day 8: “Crooked”

I took a break from the #mythicalinktober tag for this day- I needed a little change for ideas. I really liked how these guys turned out. I could see this greedy little tax collector, Mr. Hopps ( real original), hiding behind his much more sinister companion.

inktober-9-pegasus

Day 9: “Pegasus”

The last two days have been very… feathered. I zoned out to an audiobook to push through and finish them after a lot of pacing around the apartment and procrastinating, but I’m glad that I did.

A crown of the wood for the Lord of the Sky.

It’s been a great week so far! I, along with some great friends, have been taking part in Inktober.

If you haven’t heard of Inktober, it is a yearly event for the entire duration in October, when artists of all skill levels get together and attempt to draw every day of the month. There is an “official” Inktober list, but there are hundreds of customized lists. I found the one above, #mythicalinktober by @Frenone, and knew it would be the one to inspire me for the month.

If you enjoy drawing, please don’t hesitate to join in! Just draw your heart out and throw it up online with the hashtag #inktober. Several sites are  observing it, but I mainly use Twitter.

Inktober is a fantastic experience and is especially helpful if you’re in a drawing rut. Sometimes you need someone to give you an idea!

Inktober Days 4-6

For those of you who followed my first Inktober post, I’ll cut to the chase and cough up the sketches! For those who haven’t, either follow the above link or scroll to the bottom of this post to see what it’s all about!

Days 4-6:

inktober-4-cactus-cat

Day 4 : “Cactus Cat”

Yes, I know it says day 3. I never said I could count. This was a tricky prompt to get inspired for, but I always love a good cat- even the prickly personalities.

inktober-5-siren

Day 5: “Siren”

This is my favorite ink so far! I wanted to do something a bit different, So I have a lovely sea lady enjoying her maelstrom coffee.

Her favorite brew is trouble; the taste of stormy seas of cream and sugar.

inktober-6-gorgon-high

Day 6: “Gorgon”

Unfortunately my most rushed piece of the month so far. The original prompt was Dire Wolf, but I just couldn’t get Game of Thrones out of my head. I picked Gorgon from the extra prompt list. Here we have a younger, more brooding species.

She’s young. Swears she liked her snakes before they were cool.

Days 1-3:

mythical-rabbit-inktober

Day 1: “Moon Rabbit”

Probably the first time I’d drawn seriously with pen in over a year. I used a standard bic pen and really wished I had something better to ink with. Overall a fun experience and it was fun to dive in.

inktober-2-dryad

Day 2: Dryad

Getting a little more comfortable with drawing on paper. I’m usually full digital. I brought home a ball-point pen and inked a little more freely. I think this was definitely my favorite so far!

inktober-3-phoenix

Day 3: Phoenix

Today’s prompt was Valkyrie- but as you may see at the bottom of the prompt sheet, there are several replacement words you can use if not inspired by those given. I’ve seen a ton of gorgeous Valkyrie online today- but my brain just wasn’t conjuring one of them and we don’t have the luxury of more time! I chose phoenix from the list and sat down to doodle.

Light Against Legion

Blizzard Entertainment is running an official art contest through the 30th- Shadows of Argus.

The goal for my work going forward is to keep heavy focus on detailed line work while learning to create strong color palettes that work together without getting dull or muddy.

Here is the completed piece:

Light against Legion- Social Media

Light Against Legion

Turalyon and Alleria face off in their own ways against several of the Legions lesser demons, and the much more familiar Eredar. Alleria keeps her distance atop the newly reforged Vindicaar- but Turalyon prefers to face his foes in close combat on the battlefield.
There are far too many foes to face alone! Luckily there are many seasoned champions to aid in the last battle for Argus.

If you’re an artist and would like to contribute to this contest, you have until September 30th to submit your entry. The full details are in this forum post.

Sketch: Alleria Windrunner

I’ve been playing the latest WoW patch, and it’s been a lot of fun. There’s not too much content yet, but I like what I see so far. Apparently they’re spreading bits and pieces out to get everyone up to speed.

That being said, I love this character!Alleria.jpg

Looking forward to getting more play time in, but might also get some color work done. Can’t very well pass up that fel glow green.

OrlandoiX17

Orlandoix1Wow! I had an incredible time with the CrayonPonyfish team at OrlandoiX17! There was SO much indie talent in that one room, and it was great seeing such a variety. I felt like there was an opportunity to network but I KNOW there were people missed, so if you were there and want to swap cards or links please reach out!

It was so much fun seeing people sit down and play Lotia for a bit. We gave out several free keys, so really looking forward to the feedback there. Check it out if you haven’t already on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/552540/Lotia/

I know there were several art-lovers at the convention, and so many very talented artists. If you happened by the table but missed buying a print, I’ve put my personal work up under the Lotia category of my shop: http://kaylachristine.tictail.com/products/lotia

What were some of your favorite games at the convention? Is there anything that you didn’t see that you were hoping to?
