New Store at Design By Humans vs. Old Store at Teespring

It’s been difficult to find a store that I want to settle into to sell my merch exclusively. So far, it’s been best to sell my shirts from Teespring, because they have some of the cheapest options. As with anything, however, cheapest is not always best. I often worry how long the shirts will hold up through washing, or how much people may have to pay in shipping charges when they order more than one item.

In my search, I stumbled across a site called Design by Humans. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to use it, because you have to be approved for it (unlike most other merch sites) and my merchandise is very niche to the FFTCG Community. I was approved in less than 24 hours though! We are a go!

Each store has it’s own ups and downs. Design by Humans seems to provide a lot more exposure. Similar to Redbubble, it does its own marketing and has a well-designed store front of its own to publicize my merchandise. This is the one thing that Teespring really lacks. DBH’s stickers are also die cut, vs. Teesprings large, awkward rectangles. (They are also cheaper.) Lastly, DBH’s hoodies are the bomb! Customers can choose whether they want my artwork printed on the front and the back, which is great for zip up hoodies, and they are VERY generous with the sizing! I think this is what excited me the most.

So what are the upsides to Teespring?

I’ll be honest, the pay is a bit better at Teespring. I get a bit more of the cut, and I can choose to take out my pay whenever I want. I’m paid out on a monthly basis at DBH. The analytics at Teespring are also really fun to watch and are helpful to know when I’ve made a sale or  how many people have been visiting the site. I’m not sure how or why DBH hasn’t caught up on this yet. I had someone buy a hoodie earlier and have no way of knowing who it was to thank them. (I’m pretty sure I know who it is this time, but I won’t next time).

Overall, I need a bit more time to see which site does better. I’m definitely interested to see how the customer service, shipping, and quality fare for DBH in comparison to Teespring. So far with Teespring, I’ve had one customer receive the wrong shirt, and one shipment lost out of about 35 products sold.

FFTCG Community T-Shirt Opening: Mono Earth

Thanks so much you guys!

My first shirts from Teespring came in! First up is the Mono Earth Shantotto Tee- designed for the FFTCG Community. Check out the above video to see in standard Hanes cotton black and in the purple Boyfriend Tee style.

All of the profits from these shirts have gone straight into a savings fund so that my new husband and I can buy our first house together, along with two little-uns. WE NEED MORE SPACE GUYS. If we make the goal of the house, maybe we can make the goal of a Cards of Ivalice physical store? Every little bit helps and I am overjoyed by the outpouring of support, excitement, and ideas!
Check out all of my shirts here at the FFTCG Community T-Shirt shop!

Inktober Days 7-9

This is my third batch of Inktober Sketches. I post three per batch- so if you missed them, you can catch my first two here and here.

Read more about Inktober at the end of the post!

Days 7-9:

inktober-7-banshee

Day 7 : “Banshee”

A wailing banshee, inspired by the banshee models in World of Warcraft.

inktober-8-crooked

Day 8: “Crooked”

I took a break from the #mythicalinktober tag for this day- I needed a little change for ideas. I really liked how these guys turned out. I could see this greedy little tax collector, Mr. Hopps ( real original), hiding behind his much more sinister companion.

inktober-9-pegasus

Day 9: “Pegasus”

The last two days have been very… feathered. I zoned out to an audiobook to push through and finish them after a lot of pacing around the apartment and procrastinating, but I’m glad that I did.

A crown of the wood for the Lord of the Sky.

It’s been a great week so far! I, along with some great friends, have been taking part in Inktober.

If you haven’t heard of Inktober, it is a yearly event for the entire duration in October, when artists of all skill levels get together and attempt to draw every day of the month. There is an “official” Inktober list, but there are hundreds of customized lists. I found the one above, #mythicalinktober by @Frenone, and knew it would be the one to inspire me for the month.

If you enjoy drawing, please don’t hesitate to join in! Just draw your heart out and throw it up online with the hashtag #inktober. Several sites are  observing it, but I mainly use Twitter.

Inktober is a fantastic experience and is especially helpful if you’re in a drawing rut. Sometimes you need someone to give you an idea!

Inktober Days 4-6

For those of you who followed my first Inktober post, I’ll cut to the chase and cough up the sketches! For those who haven’t, either follow the above link or scroll to the bottom of this post to see what it’s all about!

Days 4-6:

inktober-4-cactus-cat

Day 4 : “Cactus Cat”

Yes, I know it says day 3. I never said I could count. This was a tricky prompt to get inspired for, but I always love a good cat- even the prickly personalities.

inktober-5-siren

Day 5: “Siren”

This is my favorite ink so far! I wanted to do something a bit different, So I have a lovely sea lady enjoying her maelstrom coffee.

Her favorite brew is trouble; the taste of stormy seas of cream and sugar.

inktober-6-gorgon-high

Day 6: “Gorgon”

Unfortunately my most rushed piece of the month so far. The original prompt was Dire Wolf, but I just couldn’t get Game of Thrones out of my head. I picked Gorgon from the extra prompt list. Here we have a younger, more brooding species.

She’s young. Swears she liked her snakes before they were cool.

Days 1-3:

mythical-rabbit-inktober

Day 1: “Moon Rabbit”

Probably the first time I’d drawn seriously with pen in over a year. I used a standard bic pen and really wished I had something better to ink with. Overall a fun experience and it was fun to dive in.

inktober-2-dryad

Day 2: Dryad

Getting a little more comfortable with drawing on paper. I’m usually full digital. I brought home a ball-point pen and inked a little more freely. I think this was definitely my favorite so far!

inktober-3-phoenix

Day 3: Phoenix

Today’s prompt was Valkyrie- but as you may see at the bottom of the prompt sheet, there are several replacement words you can use if not inspired by those given. I’ve seen a ton of gorgeous Valkyrie online today- but my brain just wasn’t conjuring one of them and we don’t have the luxury of more time! I chose phoenix from the list and sat down to doodle.

Sketch: Alleria Windrunner

I’ve been playing the latest WoW patch, and it’s been a lot of fun. There’s not too much content yet, but I like what I see so far. Apparently they’re spreading bits and pieces out to get everyone up to speed.

That being said, I love this character!Alleria.jpg

Looking forward to getting more play time in, but might also get some color work done. Can’t very well pass up that fel glow green.

OrlandoiX17

Orlandoix1Wow! I had an incredible time with the CrayonPonyfish team at OrlandoiX17! There was SO much indie talent in that one room, and it was great seeing such a variety. I felt like there was an opportunity to network but I KNOW there were people missed, so if you were there and want to swap cards or links please reach out!

It was so much fun seeing people sit down and play Lotia for a bit. We gave out several free keys, so really looking forward to the feedback there. Check it out if you haven’t already on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/552540/Lotia/

I know there were several art-lovers at the convention, and so many very talented artists. If you happened by the table but missed buying a print, I’ve put my personal work up under the Lotia category of my shop: http://kaylachristine.tictail.com/products/lotia

What were some of your favorite games at the convention? Is there anything that you didn’t see that you were hoping to?
